Seeing It in Action: Understanding instead of Assumptions

I’m a solid I, and I work in a nonprofit organization where I collaborate with volunteer groups, stakeholders, and external partners to advance the strategic goals of the organization. In order to foster better relationships between volunteer groups and staff leaders, we recently all took DISC assessments.

I compared my results to one specific external partner, and it was illuminating to see how we were on opposite sides of the “structured” and “unstructured” spectrum. My unstructured tendency is demonstrated through my loose meeting agendas, unscripted approach to dialogue, and ability to pivot with minimal preparation. Contrary to my style, this particular volunteer leader is a highly structured C-personality. He prefers to prep extensively before meetings, asking that agendas be sent a week in advance, and he employs a systematic and predictable process of communication.

Using DISC allowed us to revisit our relationship from a more objective place of understanding, rather than relying on assumptions. Recognizing this difference has significantly enriched my relationship with this stakeholder. I’ve since found that I’ve been more inclined to adapt to meet my partner’s style. Having a keen understanding of each other’s operating styles and tendencies has allowed us to be more effective leaders together.
